The twin town link between Gosport and the French holiday resort of Royan has been described as one of the most successful in the United Kingdom. Activity centres around an annual exchange visit which can claim to be one of the longest running consistent events of its kind in the United Kingdom.
Founded in 1959, there has been a strong link between Civic Associations, Sporting Clubs and passionate people of both towns. Today the twinning is kept running thanks to time and resources volunteered by members of the public

Historical exchange between Gosport and Royan has resulted in life-long connections and even a marriage!
The twinning of Gosport and Royan is a testament to the power of friendship and cross-cultural understanding, spanning over six decades. This enduring bond began in the aftermath of World War II, a period of rebuilding and reconciliation across Europe. The initial seeds of twinning were sown by a desire to foster peace and goodwill across a continent devastated and divided. Individuals in both communities recognised the importance of building bridges to create connections of common benefit.
In 1959 the twinning between Gosport and Royan was formalised.
This marked the beginning of a vibrant relationship that has enriched the lives of countless residents in both towns. Over the years, the twinning has flourished, encompassing a wide range of cultural, social, and economic exchanges. From the outset, the emphasis has been on people-to-people connection.
As was the tradition from the start, families today still open their homes to visitors, fostering deep friendships and a genuine appreciation for each other’s cultures.
School exchanges have allowed young people to connect with and experience life in another country, broadening their horizons and promoting language learning. Sports clubs, cultural associations, and community groups have all played a vital role in strengthening the ties between Gosport and Royan.
